An Invitation to Paint, Learn, and Connect

For me, Formline is more than just an art style; it’s a visual language that carries the stories, values, and spirit of my Tlingit ancestors. It is a profound connection to my culture and my homeland. When my father first taught me the basics, and later when I had the privilege of studying under master carver Nathan Jackson, I realized that this art form was a bridge—a way to connect the past to the present.

My mission as an artist is to share this beautiful language with a wider audience, and my workshops are the most direct and personal way I can do that. I created these classes because I believe that the act of creating—of holding a brush and laying down these ancient forms—is the most powerful way to build a true appreciation for the culture. It’s an experience I am deeply passionate about sharing.

What to Expect

When you join one of my workshops, you are stepping into an immersive, sensory experience designed to connect you with your own creativity and the spirit of the Pacific Northwest.

The Presentation: Each class begins with a short presentation where I share the history and foundational principles of Formline design. We explore the meaning of the core shapes—the ovoids, U-forms, and S-forms—and how they are used to depict animals and supernatural beings from our oral histories.

The Painting: You will then be guided, step-by-step, in creating your own beautiful Formline piece on a prepared Western Red Cedar plank. As you paint, the sounds of traditional village music and the aroma of cedar will surround you.

The Connection: To complete the experience, we share a cup of wild herbal tea and traditional smoked fish bites, connecting us to the taste and feel of the PNW. This is a relaxed, supportive environment for all skill levels.

Upcoming Workshop: “Xóots” (The Bear)

In this session, you will create your own traditional Formline painting of the Bear, “Xóots,” a symbol of power, courage, physical strength, and leadership, on a beautifully prepared 7in x 16in Western Red Cedar plank.
